IUGR in a nutshell

The Institute for Environmental History and Regional Development (Institut für Umweltgeschichte und Regionalentwicklung, IUGR e.V.) was founded in December 1991 in Berlin. Founding members were environmental experts from the former GDR (German Democratic Republic) and Western Berlin. Since 2001 the IUGR is based in Neubrandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is associated to the Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences. The Institute for Environmental History and Regional Development is a registered non-profit association (e.V.) and is run voluntarily by the members.

Archive of Environmental History

One of the institute's main aims is the promotion of science and research in the field of environmental history. Environmental history is understood as collective term for approaches and results of historical environmental research.

Core of the IUGR is the so called Studienarchiv Umweltgeschichte (Archive of environmental history) which nationwide is the most comprehensive collection on the history of environmental protection and nature conservation in the former GDR and the East German federal states (Neue Länder). The IUGR maintains the Archive since 1991.

The collection is based on the donations of currently nearly 600 individuals, institutions, organizations or groups who were dealing with environmental and natural protection in a professional or/and voluntary manner in the former GDR.

The Archive consists of a comprehensive library that maintains about 12.000 books that are made accessible and many journals from about 600 technical periodicals. The archive also contains a comprehensive collection of archive materials.
